Quoth the Raven: 'Nevermore'

(October 1990)

My girlfriend bought me
a wax figure
(pierced with a wick)
of Margaret Thatcher.

We intended to burn it
in celebration
The night the Tories
lost the election.

Though I've moved out
the doll still stands
here on my bookcase
handbag in hand.

The paint's worn off
the poor battered cow.
I couldn't have burned her
